Successful completion of the CCNA program, along with a continued interest in Cisco and internetworking, will surely lead you down an exciting career path!

After completing this unit, you should be able to:
  • Identify the types of questions that will be on the Cisco CCNA exam

  • List the requirements that must be met to reach the CCNA certification skill level

  • Explain the necessary preparations for the CCNA exam

This unit does not address any specific Cisco objectives. However, it does provide background information that is essential for the CCNA exam.
In the course index, questions about background information are indicated with the abbreviation BCK and a short description of the question subject matter.

Topic 1.1: CCNA Certification

*The CCNA Program
The CCNA program was created to provide two things:
  • a solid introduction to the Cisco internetworking operating system (IOS) and Cisco hardware
  • an introduction to internetworking in general, not just Cisco's

*Requirements
Here is a list of requirements that must be met to reach the CCNA certification skill level. You must be able to understand or do the following:
  • Install, configure, and operate simple-routed LAN, routed WAN, and switched LAN networks
  • Comprehend and configure IP, IGRP, IPX, serial, AppleTalk, Frame Relay, IP RIP, VLANs, IPX RIP, Ethernet, and access lists
  • Install and/or configure a network
  • Use Internet access solutions that reduce unnecessary broadcasts and lessen WAN costs, to optimize WAN
  • Arrange remote access by combining dial-up connectivity with traditional, remote LAN-to-LAN access, and supporting the higher levels of performance needed for new applications like Internet commerce, multimedia, etc.

Topic 1.2: Exam Tips

*Timing Is Everything
The CCNA exam consists of 45-55 questions, to be answered in 75 minutes. Cisco exams are offered in secure, proctored environments. You can register for an exam by contacting a Cisco-authorized Career Certifications exam vendor such as Prometric.

Question 1

Question 2

Topic 1.2.1: Question Strategies

*Reading Answer Choices
Many of the questions on the test will have answer choices that look identical, especially the syntax questions.
Read through each of the choices carefully and note any subtle differences. An answer with the commands in the wrong order, or one character missing will be counted as wrong.

*Multiple Choice
All of the CCNA exam questions are multiple choice, as are the examples presented in these practice exams.
You take the exam on a computer at the test site.

*Reviewing before the Exam
You should try to arrive at the exam center with time to spare, so that you can settle in and review your study materials.
You should especially review the IP tables and other exam-related information.

*Reading Questions
In addition to the answer choices, you should read each question carefully.
You don't want to assume anything, and you want to be clear on exactly what the question is asking.

*Answer All Questions
Answer every question. Even if you are unsure of the correct answer, do not leave a question unanswered, because it will count against you.
Try eliminating any obviously wrong answers first to help you make an educated guess.

*Answer Carefully
You do not have the freedom to move forward and backward, answering the questions in random order, while taking the exam.
With this in mind, you should answer each question in order, no matter how difficult, the best that you can.

Question 3

Question 4

Topic 1.2.2: Before the Exam

*Subnet Masks
You are not allowed to use the Windows calculator during the exam, so it is best to memorize the following table of subnet masks available for a Class C network. You can then jot down this information on the scratch paper you are given before you begin the exam.
Examine the following table
Subnet Mask Length of Subnet Mask(bits) Number of Subnets Number of Hosts per Subnet
255.255.255.252 30 62 2
255.255.255.248 29 30 6
255.255.255.240 28 14 14
255.255.255.224 27 6 30
255.255.255.192 26 2 62

Topic 1.2.3: After the Exam

*Exam Results
After completing the exam, you will be given immediate online notification of whether you passed or failed, and a printed Examination Score Report that includes your exam results by section. This printed report will be given to you by the test administrator.

*Notifying Cisco
There is no need to send your test results to Cisco, as they are automatically forwarded to them within five working days of exam completion. If you pass the exam, you will receive confirmation from Cisco within two to four weeks.
